St Mark's Church Preschool News

Helen Harpin

At St Mark's Church Preschool we know that giving children the very best start in life is a serious business, but it should also be fun. I am dedicated to ensuring that every child achieves their full potential whilst they are with us and it is impotant that they look forward to coming every day and enjoy the time that they spend in our care.

Helen Harpin Manager of St Mark's Church Preschool

Some of you may have seen recent stories in the press concerning the dangers of ‘button’ batteries, which are found in watches, calculators, scales, hearing aids, key fobs, ‘flameless’ candles & nightlights & small remote controls amongst other things.  If accidentally swallowed, the small, round batteries can get lodged in the oesophagus and burn a hole through its lining.  Hospitals report seeing an increase in the number of cases in the last year – see BBC news story, link below.

The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) has more information on this and other hazards for children on their website, link below.

The Department of Health has issued guidance on the use of plastic socket covers in health & social care premises, which may also be of interest to childcare providers.  Please see the article in Nursery World, link below.

The Foundation Years website have published an article clarifying guidance on administering medicines in early years settings, see link below.  It also contains a link to guidance on infection control in schools and settings.

Below is a link to a recently produced leaflet for the early years sector to assist staff and childminders in answering the most frequently asked questions regarding the nasal spray flu vaccination being offered to children in this age group.

It is not intended for parents and children as they have their own dedicated leaflet.
